Compatibility between the 3DS and Wii U is a must, according to the impish tease.
As he said in an interview with IGN, “There is a certain dead end we come to if we just expand the volume of the game.”
I can see this going two ways. The good scenario involves a Smash Bros. game at heart with amazing cross-platform functionality, the ability to unlock secrets and exclusive stages between each other, and other crazy Sakurai magic that we can’t predict. The bad scenario? Nintendo shoehorning shitty multiplayer and dumb “exclusive” features that don’t even warrant trying out, even if you own both versions of the game.
…I expect a little of both, actually.
