The Elder Scrolls Online announced for PC and Mac

I have mixed feelings about this one.

On one hand, most MMOs tend to be steaming piles of shit.  Well, clones of steaming piles of shit, to be more precise.  But at the same time, Zenimax Online Studios’ lead developer, Matt Firor, says that the team is working hard to make “the best MMO ever made — and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

The game will be set 1,000 years before the events of Skyrim take place, and will involve three factions fighting for control of the throne.  The story doesn’t sound very original, but hell, that’s not what any of us play TES games for anyway.

The Elder Scrolls Online has been in development for years for both PC and Mac, and so far, there’s no sign of a release date.  I’m not sure how an online game will work with the traditional Elder Scrolls formula, but we’ll see if Zenimax can pull this one off.

Considering the Ouroboros symbolism, on top of Skyrim's apocalypse story and undertones, this is obviously about the changing of the different ages, which may be interesting, if not overtly apocolyptic in the face of 2012. It would be fantastic if people could have their own private worlds for modding, you visit someones house and enter their world.I would love a political system where your merits and choices, and being caught or praised by your respective government, gives you greater insight into the conspiracy the game will obviously be about.

Lion, Dragon, Pheonix. Their Symbolism is way obvious.

Nezgroul I asked myself the same thing at first, but maybe they'll somehow do something unique to the genre.  I'm going to wait until we get more information before I judge it too hard.

GP Travis  Nezgroul They might could have limited modding tools and have a monthly design challenge or something. The winning design could be in an area that changes appearance every month due to daedric magic.

So it takes place before any established Elder Scrolls games, so they don't have to deal with the existing canon?

dmcgee627 It seems that way, though I'm not really sure that's a bad thing.  If we want this to have a chance at being the "best MMO ever made," then they're going to need all the freedom that they can get, development-wise.
