Capcom Posts Sales Projections For Four Upcoming Games, Apparently Lost Faith in Dragon’s Dogma

Capcom recently revealed their sales projections for four major titles, with some games clearly assumed to be more anticipated than others. The data below is for fiscal year 2012, obviously, and includes all regions and platforms, like usual. What it doesn’t include, however, is Capcom’s sudden lack of faith in Dragon’s Dogma.

The big slugger, Resident Evil 6, is expected to hit 7 million copies, while Lost Planet 3 is aiming for 1.4 million. I’m actually surprised at that last one, after the brand damage that was done by Lost Planet 2 according to diehard fans of the original.

Still angry about what Capcom allowed to happen to Dante in the new Devil May Cry reboot? Well, they’re expecting someone to buy it, forecasting 2 million sold. Here’s hoping– that’d probably be more than every other Ninja Theory title combined!

Finally, we come to the curious case of Dragon’s Dogma, piqued at 1.5 million copies sold. That’s certainly not bad, especially for a new IP. But recall a few months back when Capcom expected it’s faux-Western RPG to sell 10 million copies, and was absolutely sure the title would break a million in Japan alone.

What gives?

Even hopeful speculation by the game’s devs doesn’t make the 8.5 million difference any less staggering, and it seems especially odd when the producer of DD stated “in Japan, we can absolutely sell a million units” not even a month ago.

Maybe it was merely wishful thinking on the company’s part, or maybe they know something we don’t. The game’s demo released several weeks ago, and ranged from tepid to warm reception from the gamer community, but we don’t know how often it was downloaded, and that could be a factor in this odd contrast.

The game could have hit a development snag, too, or something along those lines, which Capcom feels might damage sales. It’s no secret that Capcom loves releasing DLC that, arguably, should have been part of the original experience; what if that 40 hour campaign was only so long if you paid for half of it as DLC?

If they’re expecting a sleeper hit here, well, they’re suggesting it’ll be more like a coma. We’ll know for sure in a few short weeks how well-received both critically and commercially Dragon’s Dogma is, but for now, we can only speculate.

What Capcom says publicly via marketing channels is different then internal numbers.  This isn't news, it's a misunderstanding on the authors part.

Well, it's SPECULATION on the author's part. We're not a "news" site, we just post interesting articles on an individual writer basis, plus any editorials, opinion articles, etc.

Thanks for visiting!

Surprisingly, I just recently learned of Dragon's Dogma 2 days ago from a friend who found the downloadable demo.  It seems like the publicity has been weak and word of this title is not wide spread.  It seems like a real interesting game.

LtMorgan They've had a ton of "advertising"-- mostly gameplay videos and trailers. And, they make the game look AWESOME.

The problem is, they don't seem to be trying to spread them to the masses. They just post them online and... hope virulence spreads.

considering how buggy dogma is and how bad it looks i can see how they think it will sell so low plus almost no advertising isnt helping either im still gonna wait the demo wasnt very good for me so unless its very optimized by release i wont buy it.

Funnily enough I would have purchased this game on release, however because of how Capcom likes to do their DLC I think I'm going to hold off until an ultimate edition release.

The graph shows ONLY fiscal year 2012 games sales.

Dragon's Dogma expected sales haven't changed since last year's forecast, as seen here: http://www.gamespot.com/news/capcom-offers-game-sales-projections-6312992

The 10 million quote comes from an interview with the director or producer of the game, who stated that they wanted (i.e. not expected) to sell that number.

@Msk I was going to say the same thing. My one holdup was the fact that it wasn't just one interview, it was plasterred all over the internet in multiple ways.

Either way, the point stands that something's amiss. Do they only expect to sell 500,000 copies of the game in the entire world outside of Japan? The article could be more comprehensive, but the oddities definitely exist.

@Greg the Gorgon I wouldn't be surprised if that "one million units in Japan"  were also wishful thinking. Some recent Capcom releases have underperformed, so maybe they're just being cautious. Anyway, I really don't know how this forecast has been done, so it's not like Ican cast any light on this issue.

I may be worng, but as far as I know, that 10 million quote was only mentioned in that interview, and the media, possibly fueled by the desire to get some extraordinary page hits, made too big a deal of that extravagant claim.
