Farewell, Metal Gear Online

Metal Gear Online was by no means a smash hit. Originally launched as the multiplayer component of Metal Gear Solid 4, the distinctly unique online experience gained a dedicated fanbase. Sure, it never reached Call of Duty levels, but it was gave an impressive and distinct experience. Tonight, those fans still around will be squeezing in their last few moments with the game on it’s fourth anniversary, which happens to be the day it goes offline.

Konami postponed the game’s demise by a full year for its hardcore fans’ show of faith, but the time still had to come. Their official announcement is as follows: “We have regretfully come to a point where players have experienced all that this iteration of Metal Gear Online is able to offer. Therefore, it saddens us to announce that we have decided to end online service with the upcoming fourth anniversary of online service. We would like to apologize to all of the users who are currently enjoying the Online Service for this title, and kindly ask for your understanding.”

Anyone have any special memories of Metal Gear Online? How about the portable titles? Did you ever play it at all?
