The home of Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled‘s Irish base of operations, PopCap Dublin, has officially been closed down, as first confirmed by former employees and later by official statements from the company. A prepared statement reads: ”Europe remains a critical market for PopCap and we will continue to grow our presence through centralized services operated from our North American offices and through the extensive European EA network.”
The company’s Irish employees were given the required 30-day notice of redundancy, which is enough time for EA to legally squeeze by, but not quite enough to not ruin a bunch of people’s lives for no given reason. Ironically, EA just gained a few hundred jobs at a customer service center in Galway, Ireland, though the likelihood of PopCap employees making the transition is seemingly low.
I guess we can chalk this up to another studio EA acquired and gutted or closed. Will the whole of PopCap be next, “absorbed” into some mysterious branch of Electronic Arts, never to be heard of again? Stay tuned!
